I wrote and re-wrote this blog post a few times.  The temptation to joke around about tweed is almost too much to bear.

Just a little thing I did yesterday at the coffee shop.

What is your "time to get down to business" music?  What bands help you concetrate?  My two go-to's are DoMakeSayThink and Beck.  I don't really listen to them much outside of trying to get into the zone.

Also what do you do for a living?

I am trying to push that style I started doing a few posts back.  Any ideas how I could translate this into a viable solution for an animation coloring technique? I'd like to try something out that looks like this but moves.

I'm trying out a new thing with photoshop after I paint things with gauche in my sketchbook. You can see the orignial scan here. I like how it has an angled look now. 

It has a Tim Biskup feel to it all.  I think it is working out alright. I am going to try and push this further.

Monday. Funday.

I have been really bad at drawing in my sketchbook lately. Things have been pretty busy for me.

I have been able to find some time to read "Perspective and Viewpoint" By Orson Scott Card. I was super excited to find this book because this is exactly what impressed me about Card's work. He mainly talks about how to create a fictional yet believable character. Some of it is common sense, but it starting to read like a psychology or philosophy book, which it pretty typical of Card.

What should I read next?

Back to the foundations.

Life drawing doesn't get much reaction from people on the the internet.  I think its really interesting to see peoples life drawing chops because I know I didn't really learn how to draw until I hunkered down and tried to draw what I saw.  Then my cartoons got better! My teenage brain couldn't understand it.  But now that I've grown up (just a bit) I can see the coloration between my extremely exaggerated cartoons and my ability to draw from life.  If I don't practice life drawing, my cartoons just start to suck.

If you feel stuck on some illustration or character design, grab $2 and go to a coffee shop and draw the weird people there for a while.

Whats your favorite place to do some life drawing?

Meet Dick Tracy: Rad-Ass Detective.

For some reason I got this Dick Tracy meets Dead Leaves thing in my head.  I haven't really ever been interested in Dick Tracy before, but now I have this large draw to him.  Maybe its his rad-ass yellow coat and hat.  This is definitely my own interpretation, but that is what makes it fun right? I was inspired by MISTERHIPP. His stuff is pretty neat and is always hipp. 

I could get into this.  Does anyone know if copyright laws restrict me from making a comic or something if I gave it away for free?

Simple design big characters.

My goal with these little excersies was to get the most impact from the simplest design.  I think I am getting somewhere with it.

I need some good examples of simple-yet-beautiful Illustration/animation/film/music.  Do you have a suggestion?

Hello world.  It seems I only have time for some quick sketches today.  Also today in England I saw a lady that had a red nose.  This is usually a stylistic choice for me, but I had no idea people actually had bright red noses.

In the traveling I've done in the last month I think I have only increased my desire to travel more.  Its comforting for me (a noob in the travel world) to see new places and expand my visual dictionary of what the world looks like.

So where is your favorite place in the world. Is it s cafe or coffee shop? Perhaps a street or alley way.  Let me know.  I want to add it to my itinerary.

This turned out better than I thought it would.  I want to get into some pieces that are more planned out.  You know like real illustrations and stuff.  Also I hope I am still an animator.  I really need to animate some stuff...

I painted this while on the airplane. I am still trying to get lighting down.  Looks like I am going to have to do some more life drawing so I can learn how to draw better.  I love life drawing, but it doesn't make for interesting blog posts.  Anyone got any fun sketchbook tricks?  I try to draw everyday but I need something to shake things up and keep me interested.

I am thinking about doing a illustration print give away.  It sound like a fun way to connect with you guys. I'll pay the shipping and everything!  If you could pick any from my blog which one would it be.  Put a link in a comment to let me know. I'll put up a post in a few weeks with official details.

Today I learned Bigfoot is specific to the US. It made me sad.

This last weekend we were in Ohrid.  It is a HUGE spring fed lake in the mountains.  It has a wonderful little towns all around it and has a ton of church history.  There is, however, no big foot folklore there which seems ridiculous.  Just look at those mountains and crystal clear lake. Here are a few pictures of beauty.

This guy kinda looks like a creepy guy that hangs out at Broadway Cafe.  I guess I was so focused on him that I drew him out of my subconscious .

Its been a great few days in here in Skopje. Today I went to a corner market to get some lemons and sparkling water.  I almost was able to get through the whole interaction without asking her to speak english.
Here are some pictures from yesterday.  We walked to a lake in the mountains. Then spent some time in a beautiful Monastery in the mountains.

Coffee spillz

Because I try to draw a butt load, I often get discouraged or burnt out.  These coffee drawings get me out of that funk and back on track. As some of you know I spill coffee (or other liquids that have color) in my sketchbook, wait for them to dry, then find faces and figures in the subtleties of the dried coffee.

I leave for Macedonia in about 9 days. I am super pumped to go spend some time totally out of the small world I seem to live in most the time. That being said, I will probably put a few photos and videos up here when I am gone.
